To start with, you need to make a rectangle with the dimensions of 16 by 24 inches. The rectangle should start from one front of the stump and there should be space left on the other side.

The space left on the right and left the side of the stump will be the armrests while the space left on the stump behind the rectangle, will act as the backrest.

Now, the next step will be to smooth the edges. If you don’t do this, the person who will sit on this tree stump chair will be uncomfortable or may not be able to sit at all.
You can use an angle grinder for this purpose. Make sure to smooth the edges from the front of the stump chair, top of the backrest and top of the armrests.
Now you can apply the polyurethane with a high-quality synthetic paintbrush. 2 to 3 coats would be more than enough.
